Fluoroscopy is a real-time X-ray that shows movement inside the body, like a live video. It allows doctors to see how organs and systems are functioning as they work.
What it is used for
- Evaluating joints, bones and muscles
- Assessing organs like the heart, lungs and kidneys
- Examining digestive, urinary and reproductive systems
- Guiding certain diagnostic or interventional procedures
Why it is important
- Provides real-time imaging of movement
- Helps diagnose functional issues not visible on static images
- Improves accuracy during procedures
What to expect
- Non-invasive, low-dose X-ray imaging
- Quick and minimally invasive
- May involve contrast depending on the exam
How to prepare
- Follow the diet sheet we send when you book
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight unless told otherwise
- Allow extra time, these studies run longer

Common questions
Can I walk in for fluoroscopy?
No. Fluoroscopy, such as a barium or G.I. study, is by appointment. Walk-ins are for plain X-rays only. Book online or call 416-462-0064.
Do I need a requisition for fluoroscopy?
Yes. We accept a valid requisition from any licensed Ontario healthcare provider, on any form, from any clinic or hospital.
Is fluoroscopy covered by OHIP?
Yes. With a valid requisition, OHIP covers fluoroscopy in full. There is no co-payment, no facility fee and nothing to claim back.
How much does fluoroscopy cost without OHIP?
A barium swallow is $95 and an upper G.I. series $185, as on our cash fee schedule (October 2026, HST exempt).
How do I prepare for fluoroscopy?
For barium and G.I. studies, follow the diet sheet we send when you book, and tell us if you may be pregnant. A barium enema has its own steps starting the day before: see the preparation instructions.
Where can I have fluoroscopy?
It is offered at our Etobicoke clinic.
When will my doctor get the results?
The radiologist's report reaches your doctor in 24 to 48 hours. You can also see your images and reports online through PocketHealth.
