A mammogram is a quick, low-dose X-ray used to screen for breast cancer, often before any symptoms appear. Early detection makes a major difference: when found early, breast cancer is typically easier to treat and may require less invasive care.
Covered by OHIP through the OBSP
- In Ontario, mammograms are fully covered through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).
- You can book directly, no doctor’s referral needed if you meet the criteria.
Who should get screened?
The OBSP recommends regular screening for women:
- Ages 40 to 74
- At average risk for breast cancer
- Every 2 years
What does “average risk” mean?
You are considered average risk if you:
- Have no current breast symptoms (like a lump or unusual changes).
- Have no personal history of breast cancer.
- Have not had a mammogram in the past 2 years.
What to expect
- The exam is fast, typically under 15 minutes.
- Uses very low radiation.
- Performed by experienced, certified technologists.
- Most patients find it very manageable, with only brief pressure.
Why patients choose to screen
- Peace of mind
- Detect issues early, before they become serious
- Stay proactive with your health
How to prepare
- No deodorant, powder or lotion under the arms or on the chest

Common questions
Do I need a referral for a mammogram?
Not for a screening mammogram through the Ontario Breast Screening Program, if you meet its criteria: you can book it yourself. A diagnostic mammogram, to look at a specific concern, needs a requisition from your doctor or nurse practitioner.
Is a mammogram covered by OHIP?
Yes. With a valid requisition, OHIP covers mammography in full, and screening through the Ontario Breast Screening Program is covered without one. There is no co-payment and nothing to claim back.
How much does a mammogram cost without OHIP?
A mammogram is $95, as on our cash fee schedule (October 2026, HST exempt).
How do I prepare for a mammogram?
On the day of your exam, after showering, use no deodorant, antiperspirant or talcum powder under the arms or on the chest. Wear a two-piece outfit, and bring the date and place of your last mammogram.
How long does a mammogram take?
About 20 minutes.
Where can I get a mammogram?
It is offered at our 123 Edward Street, Lawrence & Dufferin, Woodbridge and Port Hope clinics. See mammograms in the GTA.
When will my doctor get the results?
The radiologist's report reaches your doctor in 24 to 48 hours. You can also see your images and reports online through PocketHealth.
