A BMD scan is a quick, non-invasive test that measures bone strength and detects early bone loss, before it becomes a problem. It is the first and only way to assess osteoporosis and fracture risk.
Why it matters
- Bone loss often happens silently. By the time a fracture occurs, osteoporosis may already be advanced.
- A BMD scan helps you catch changes early and take control of your long-term health.
Who should consider a scan
- Women 65+
- Women under 65 with higher fracture risk
- Anyone with risk factors or seeking a baseline assessment
- Anyone looking to optimize performance and reduce injury risk
- Anyone who wants a proactive baseline of their bone health, before problems start
What to expect
- Fast and painless, typically under 15 minutes.
- No radiation concerns: an extremely low dose.
- Performed by experienced, certified technologists.
- Most patients find it very manageable, with only brief pressure.
- You stay fully dressed on an open table.
Why patients choose BMD
- Protect bone health
- Detect breaks early, before they become serious
- Stay proactive with your health

Common questions
Do I need a requisition for a bone density test?
Yes. A bone mineral density test is ordered by your doctor or nurse practitioner. We accept a valid requisition from any licensed Ontario healthcare provider, on any form, from any clinic or hospital. A DEXA body composition scan is a separate self-pay scan that needs no requisition.
Is a bone density test covered by OHIP?
Yes. With a valid requisition, OHIP covers bone mineral density testing in full. There is no co-payment, no facility fee and nothing to claim back.
How much does a bone density test cost without OHIP?
A bone density test is $194, as on our cash fee schedule (October 2026, HST exempt).
How do I prepare for a bone density test?
Do not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your test. Wear no metal in or on your clothing; a two-piece outfit is easiest. Bring a list of your supplements and medications.
How long does a bone density test take?
About 15 minutes.
Where can I have a bone density test?
It is offered at our 123 Edward Street, Lawrence & Dufferin, Woodbridge and Port Hope clinics.
When will my doctor get the results?
The radiologist's report reaches your doctor in 24 to 48 hours. You can also see your images and reports online through PocketHealth.
